FOX HALL VEGAN COOKERY COURSES A little bit about us and our kitchen |
|
|
As far as we know, when we opened in September 1990, Fox
Hall Vegan B&B was the first true vegan B&B in the country. Since then, we have welcomed guests from
all over the world, given out countless recipes and advice and been asked
over and over again when we are going to produce a recipe book and give
cookery courses.
In December 2007 we moved from
Fox Hall in Sedgwick to a much bigger house to enable our business to
grow. It has taken us 7 months to
complete the transformation of Prizet Stables and the best bit was planning
the catering kitchen. It used to be a
1-bedroom apartment with a kitchen, sitting room and bathroom. The walls, ceiling and fittings were
removed to reveal a large, light and airy space with wooden beams and a truss
dating back to about 1830. It was
amazing to think that when our joiners made another truss to match the
original they were doing exactly the same calculations as the joiners in the
past, although with different tools! |

|
The stainless steel sink,
moveable units and wall cupboards were tailor made and fitted for us by a local
firm, as well as a commercial dishwasher which is economical on water
use. We have 2 Neff double ovens,
ceramic hobs with 8 rings, and self-closing solid oak drawers and storage
cupboards fitted by another local firm.
By far the very best fitting in the kitchen is the beautiful
Burlington blue slate worktop. Its
our little piece of Lakeland from the quarry I passed every morning on the
10-mile bus journey to school in Ulverston in the 1970s. It took 3 months to find the perfect piece
which was then sliced in two, jointed, shaped and polished. It took 4 workmen with steel toecaps to
lift the 2 pieces into place. |
|
|
|
Over the next few years we plan
to start making best use of our large garden to grow as much veganic produce for
the kitchen as possible. Many of the
borders are overgrown and will need lots of attention but we have already
planted some fruit trees, fruit bushes and a herb garden, installed 2 sheds,
2 compost bins and our next target is rainwater harvesting for the allotment. Prior to our 17 years experience of running the B&B we both had previous experience in the catering trade, which has proved invaluable. Between us we hold City & Guilds qualifications in Catering, Cake Decorating and the Cordon Vert Diploma. Sylvia Wilkinson |
